What You’ll Learn: Making complex concepts simple, using case studies, how press conferences work

The best reporters make complex topics simple – it’s what elevates their news stories and helps them cut through. We’ll look at how to make confusing concepts clear, and transform dense information into engaging copy that is easy-to-read and tailored to your audience. You’ll learn how to make the most of complicated quotes from interviews or press conferences on tricky subjects and we’ll get you thinking and acting like a sub-editor to transform your writing.

You’ll also be asked to put your reporting skills into action: you’ll be plunged you into a real-time news conference, and asked to produce a brilliant story from the information you glean from it. By simulating a situation that journalists often find themselves in, you’ll understand how well you can think on your feet in a pressurised situation.

This two-module news reporter course will be led by an experienced editor and trainer who will share their practical expertise through presentations, discussion and practical exercises – ensuring you have opportunity to reinforce your learning, test your understanding and receive feedback

This course is for you if you want to hone your news sense, refresh or build your practical news skills. It’s a great follow-on course for those who have completed News Writing Essentials. We also offer a full-day version, News Writing Fundamentals: Write Stories with Impact.
